The great outdoors
As COVID lingers and gets more contagious (thank you Omicron), I am opting to continue shooting in my other studio - the great outdoors; however, winter in Vancouver BC poses it’s own unique challenges and lately, it’s been a LOT.
Rain, so much rain.
Snow, so much snow.
Frigid temps (two weeks at -14 to -2C?!!)
But as always, we persevere and adapt to the climate we are fortunate to call home.
I’ll be continuing my “outdoor studio” / location work until spring at least due to COVID and while my home studio is closed and going through an ill-timed restoration (flooded in September 2021), shooting all over the Metro Vancouver area. Locations will include from the west side of Richmond out to Langley, wherever the weather and mood of the session takes me. I enjoy both natural and built landscapes equally when it comes to portrait / editorial sessions; they provide me and my models with so much to work with and the environments never lack for interest.
The most challenging part of the “outdoor studio” is the weather and light conditions… this time of year, weather on the “wet coast” can change quickly and the light fades FAST once we hit that 4:00pm mark. I enjoy the challenge of working outdoors in natural light and utilize many tools to overcome the obstacles Mother Nature throws at me including strobes, reflectors and plain old ingenuity. The photos below are an illustration of these tools at work with both natural and “canned” light being used to illuminate my gorgeous models. I look forward to more work like this in the coming weeks as we creep ever closer towards Spring and longer days.
On another note: I anxiously look forward to the day when I can reopen my home space for studio work again… (I haven’t worked in that space, with the exception of one very brief portrait session in August ‘21, since February 2020.) It’s been sad and a little depressing to not use a space that I love so much. BUT with the time off from my studio, I have been rethinking a few things and will be implementing some changes in the space once I get it reopened later this year.
I encourage you to visit my instagram feed for new work, fun mixed media art portraits and to watch for casting opportunities as we start moving more firmly into the new year. Interested in booking a session? Please email me for rates and dates!
